Rebounding

For some, finding the fun in exercise is more of a challenge than actually exercising. Or maybe you aren’t able to participate in typical exercises due to age or injury. If you relate to either you’re in luck because there is an exercise that is growing in popularity and is sure to bring out the playful child in you, safely. Rebounding (no, I don’t mean bouncing back from an ex) is just bouncing on a mini trampoline, simply as that. Many of us buy trampolines for our kids as toys; little did we know, we have a health machine in disguise. It even has the seal of approval from rocket scientists, literally, NASA says rebounding is great!

NASA conducted a study on the benefits of rebounding in the 80’s which ended in the confirmation of the health benefits that have been claimed for 40 years.

Benefits of Rebounding

- Boots lymphatic drainage which supports healing, skin health, toxin release and relaxation

- Improves digestion

- Supports the skeletal system & increases bone mass

- Helps your body absorb the benefits from other exercises

- Increases oxygen circulation through the body giving you more energy

- Strengthens the cells

- Less stress on the body decreases chances of injury

G-Force, gravitational force, is what creates the magic in rebounding. On a daily basis throughout the day your body will experience a G-Force of 1 (about equal to your body weight). While rebounding you experience a G-Force 2-3 times greater. It is this G-Force that is strengthening and toning your body. Think of it like this, “if you weigh 100 lbs., on a rebounder it is like you are bouncing up with a weight of 200-300 lbs”. This force is only exerted on the body for merely a fraction of a second which is why it doesn’t cause any unwanted stress on the body. Also, as you are accelerating upward you have a feeling of weightlessness which has your body in a state of relaxation.

Since rebounding doesn’t put as much stress on the body as other exercises it opens up the audience range. When running, or even walking, is not an option, people who suffer from chronic pain, injuries, the handicapped and the elderly have found that rebounding is something they can not only do, but have benefited. Bouncing on a trampoline isn’t as taxing on the respiratory system, muscles, tendons and ligaments compared to running which makes it ideal for those who have decreased energy or injuries. Many rebounders (the mini trampolines) have stability bars for those with mental disabilities or disabilities that effect balance. Dr. James White, Director of Research and Rehabilitation for the University of California at San Diego’s physical education department says that “rebounding allows the muscles to go through the full range of motion at equal force…it helps people learn to shift their weight properly and to be aware of body positions and balance.” Rebounding is used in many rehabilitation centers for those recovering from surgery.

If you haven’t noticed, Trampoline Parks are growing in popularity as a recreational activity. If the gym isn’t your thing, pop in and get your G-Force on!
